The Clay County Board of Commissioners has approved a proposal from the Sheriff’s Office to install Cradlepoint mobile routers in patrol vehicles. The devices will allow deputies to upload dash- and body-camera footage directly from the field, removing the need to drive back to the law-enforcement center to offload video.
Sheriff Emdinck explained that the cellular Wi-Fi routers will enable deputies to send video “from anywhere within Clay County,” which will make it easier and faster to share footage with prosecutors and courts. The five-year plan costs about $2,231 per unit, including hardware and cloud services, but officials expect to save around $12,000 annually by cutting down on SIM-card costs.
Funding will come from 2025 budget savings due to several unfilled staff positions, which generated approximately $75,000 in savings—more than enough to cover the five-year cost. County IT staff added that the routers offer better connectivity and reliability than the vehicles’ existing systems. The board voted unanimously to approve the purchase after a motion from Commissioner Mosgrove, seconded by Commissioner Bier.
County officials expect the upgrade to speed up video evidence processing, improve efficiency for prosecutors and courts, and allow deputies to spend more time on patrol.
